The courses

Five classes, one afternoon each.

Every class is dry-fire and classroom-based. Bring questions, not ammunition.

Gun Safety 101 — the four rules

2 hours · 120 minutes · ages 16+ · free

The starting point. Treat every gun as loaded, keep the muzzle where it cannot hurt, keep your finger off the trigger, know what is behind your target. Dry-fire practice with inert training aids, then the rules in plain words.

Safe Storage & a safer home

90 minutes · ages 18+ · free

Locked, unloaded, ammunition stored apart — and what to do about children, guests, pets and vehicles. We walk through the storage options that fit your house, and you leave with a written plan for your own home.

Handling, clearing & transport

2.5 hours · 150 minutes · ages 18+ · free

How to check a firearm is unloaded, how to unload and load it without a finger in the trigger guard, and how to move it from the car to the range legally and safely. Bring your own firearm unloaded and cased, or use one of our inert trainers.

The law, where you live

1 hour · 60 minutes · ages 18+ · free

Owning, buying, carrying and storing: what the rules are where you live, in plain words, with the official places to check. General information, not legal advice — bring your questions and your own jurisdiction.

After a discharge — first aid and the paperwork

1 hour · 60 minutes · ages 16+ · free

What to do in the first minute after an accidental discharge: make the area safe, call for help, treat the wound, and know what the law may ask you to report. Co-taught with a first-aid trainer.

How a class runs

  • Arrive ten minutes early. The door opens at the start time on the schedule, and registration closes 24 hours before the class or when the seats are gone — whichever comes first.
  • Nothing in the first ten minutes surprises you. Nobody is asked what they own, nobody signs anything about a firearm, and no ammunition comes into the room, ever.
  • Short lessons, then a drill. Each class is a run of short lessons, and each one ends with a drill you can repeat at home. The whole timetable is in the timing table — thirty-five lessons, eight hours, all of it accounted for.
  • Questions the whole way through. The instructor stops for questions as they come, and the last ten minutes belong to you.
  • You leave with something on paper. A card of the four rules, a written storage plan for your own house, or a phone number on a card — it depends which class you took.

What each class covers, who it is for, and what you leave with.

Who it is for

Anyone who lives with a gun.

You do not need to own a firearm, shoot, or have any experience. Many people come because they are about to buy one, or because they are thinking about whether to keep one.

  • Free, and it stays free. Classes are funded by the community service budget. A donation is welcome at the door, never required, and never affects who gets a seat.
  • Twelve seats a class. Small enough that everybody gets hands on and questions get answered. Registration is first come, first served.
  • No account, no app, no signal. Everything you need to know is on this site, and it keeps working when the data does not.
  • Step-free entry and hearing loop at the Union Hall; the old library annex is first floor with an accessible restroom. Tell us what you need when you register and we will arrange it.
  • Certified instructors. Every class is taught by a certified firearms safety instructor, and the storage and law classes are co-taught with someone who works in the local public-health service.
  • Under 16s come with a parent or guardian, and the Family Safety session (ask us) is built for exactly that.

A class is not a licence, and nothing here is legal advice. For the law where you live, see the law, where you live.
